Sound Level Meter - CR:703B / Pulsar Model 63

Quick Guide

Switch the instrument on by pressing the On button

To clear all previously stored data, depress the Re-set button for five seconds

Carry out calibration - with the acoustic calibrator set to 94dB place the calibrator over the microphone and press the Cal button. The meter will automatically determine and store an off-set value and the instrument will display 93.7dB. If the weatherproof microphone foam windshield is fitted, it may be easily withdrawn from the stainless steel wire bird-spike frame to enable the calibrator to be connected to the microphone. Ensure that the calibrator is carefully fitted onto the microphone using a clockwise twisting action. Remove it in the same way by pulling and turning in a clockwise direction. This will ensure that the microphone grill is not unscrewed from the microphone capsule which could cause damage to the very delicate microphone membrane.

Using the meter in the un-programmed manual mode:

Press the SPL button and the SPL will be shown on the display

Press the Run/Stop button to begin data-logging the first event

Press the Run/Stop button to end data-logging the first event

2,500 events may be data-logged by using the Run/Stop button

Using the meter in the programmed mode:

Press the SPL button and the SPL will be shown on the display

Press the Run/Stop button to begin data-logging the first event. Subsequent events will begin automatically until the Run/Stop button is pressed at the end of the monitoring session.

The instrument may be programmed, using the 700Setup software, for specified event times, typically with durations of 15 minutes or 1 hour.

At the end of the monitoring session, a second calibration check should be performed to ensure that no significant drift in accuracy has occurred - with the calibrator set to 94dB place the calibrator over the microphone and press the Cal button. The meter will automatically register the second calibration value which is shown on the event print-out. To switch off the instrument by depress the Off button for 5 seconds.

Downloading the data

Install the 700Setup software on the PC

Connect the RS232 cable to the instrument (the socket on the left hand side under the battery cover) and the nine pin ‘D’ connector to the serial port of a PC

On the PC, run the 700Setup software

Switch the meter on

Click on Connect - the PC will then be in communication with the meter

Click on Download Event and follow the on-screen instructions, i.e. enter a name for the file to be saved. Events are given a filename suffix of .prt

The downloaded events may be printed out

Alternatively the events may be saved as comma separated variable files (having a suffix .csv) for use in a spreadsheet

Short LAeqs

Short LAeq data may be useful for consultants who wish to analyse data in greater detail.

A facility exists to download short LAeq values but to view these the post-programming software, Acoustic Editor for Windows (AEW), has to be used. This software may be purchased from the supplier.

The AEW software enables all acoustic matrices (apart from Peak values) to be re-created from the short LAeqs for any given time during the period monitored.

The instrument is able to log up to 100,000 short LAeqs the elemental values of which may be determined by the 700Setup software. Their default values are either 1 or 2 seconds but may be set to between 1/16th of a second and 16 seconds.

Short LAeqs are only logged and stored immediately after switch on and a re-set and then until the instrument is switched off. Short LAeq values are not logged upon re-starting the instrument unless the Re-set button is pressed. Re-set clears all previously stored event, calibration off-set and short LAeq data.
